Miss Universe fashion show in Davao a go after 'truce'

The Department of Tourism (DOT) is still open to "reconsidering" its decision to cancelthe Miss Universe fashion show in Davao, a tourism official said Thursday.

The DOT announced the event's cancellation Wednesday after the Davao Fashion and Design Council (DFDC) criticized the decision of the Miss Universe hosting committee to have industry veteran Renee Salud create the outfits of the candidates for the fashion show.

"Ako, gusto ko matuloy 'yung Mindanao tapestry show. We just had to decide that we cancel it, para wala ng gulo," Tourism Undersecretary Kat De Castro said in an interview on DZMM.

(I want the Mindanao tapestry show to push through. We just had to decide that we cancel it to avoid any conflict.)

De Castro said critics should understand that the local fabrics developed in Mindanao will be the focus of the show, and not individual designers.

"It was Mama Rene (Salud) who presented to us his concept of having the Mindanao weaves or fabric 'yung bida ng fashion show... Ang bida dito is the Mindanao fabric, hindi sino mang designer or anything," De Castro said.

The fashion event in President Rodrigo Duterte's hometown will push through if all parties involved "will be open to talk to each other" and "reach a compromise," De Castro said.
